Shenandoah included in report of Iowa's best schools Ryan Matheny Apr 27, 2017(KMAland) ­­

An annual report ranking high schools in each state and across the country says Decorah is the best school in Iowa.

US News & World Report evaluates how students perform on standardized tests in reading and math compared to how the state traditionally performs. The report also factors in how economically disadvantaged students perform, graduation rate and college preparedness. Only one KMAland district was recognized in the top 26 schools in the state, as Shenandoah came in at 24th.

Other schools included in the top ten were: Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Linn­Mar (Marion), Ames, West Liberty, Cedar Rapids Washington, West Des Moines Valley, Waukee, Cedar Falls and Ankeny Centennial. Iowa's top school, Decorah, ranked 847th nationally out of some 28,000 schools.

Resolution of Support: Promise of Iowa Public Education Campaign




WHEREAS, The state's children constitute "The Promise of Iowa" Through their potential as our future leaders, citizens, innovators and caretakers of their generation; and

WHEREAS, We believe funding a strong system of public education is the best investment Iowans can make to strengthen our economy, create thriving communities and improve the quality of life for every Iowan; and

WHEREAS, Our students face new challenges and opportunities in a changing world, and their public schools are evolving to help students prepare for their future; and

WHEREAS, We must continue to find ways to close achievement gaps so that Iowa public schools fulfill the ideal of equity and opportunity for all; and we must keep pace with improvements in other states, to ensure our public schools provide our students and state with an advantage; and

WHEREAS, State policy makers, locally elected school board members, educators and the business community all made a shared commitment in 2013 landmark legislation to ensure the next generation of Iowa students receives a world-class education; and

WHEREAS, The Legislature has made progress in investing in public education, but in this era of competing priorities and limited resources, state funding has fallen short in meeting the real needs of our students; and

WHEREAS, The case must be made to the Legislature that Iowa taxpayers and voters support greater investments in our public schools and are willing to commit public resources to ensure every student in our state has a well-rounded curriculum and safe, modern school facilities in each community; and

WHEREAS, As locally elected citizens entrusted with public education, Iowa school boards must take on the responsibility to tell the story and rally public support and understanding for continued investments in public education that move our state forward.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Shenandoah Community School District Board of Education pledges to join and support the efforts of "The Promise of Iowa" campaign to ensure that Iowa lawmakers continue to prioritize investments to improve the community schools that create opportunities for more than 480,000 public school Iowa students.

VOTE ON APRIL 4, 2017

The election for the renewal of the Shenandoah CSD voter approved Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) will be held on April 4, 2017 from noon to 8:00 PM. The following is a list of frequently asked questions about the levy.

What is the Physical Plant & Equipment Levy (PPEL)? The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) is a voter-approved levy that serves as one of the primary revenue sources for funding school infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements.

How does the passage of the PPEL affect me? PPEL is not a new tax for the Shenandoah Community School District, the renewal of this levy does not increase your property taxes. It authorizes the district to continue to the voter-approved rate that has been in effect for many years so that we may continue to use the funding in our maintenance and upgrades plan.

Can the PPEL program be used to offset shortages in the district’s general fund or used to pay staff salaries?
No, the PPEL revenues cannot be used for salaries, textbooks, or new educational programs. The requirements for the use of the PPEL funds are very specific in nature and are limited by what is outlined in Iowa Code.

What are some examples of how the PPEL has been used?
PPEL funds have been used for technology hardware and infrastructure; purchasing school transportation vehicles including buses and vans; maintaining and improving school grounds; building maintenance such as carpet, windows, concrete, and shop equipment. What is the difference between the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) and the State One Cent Sales and Service Tax Program? For Shenandoah Community School District, PPEL funds are used for predominately for maintenance, vehicle, and technology purchases; and the State One Cent Sales Tax is used for the district’s revenue bond payments. How many school districts in Iowa have a PPEL? Currently 241 out of 333, or over 70% of school districts in Iowa have a voted PPEL in place.

How can PPEL be used?
State law includes detailed parameters regarding how PPEL funds may be used by a school district. Per the Iowa Department of Education website, the PPEL may be used for the following purposes:

• Repairing, remodeling, reconstructing, improving, or expanding the schoolhouses or buildings and additions to existing schoolhouses. • Purchase and improvement of grounds.
• Purchase, lease, or lease-purchase of equipment or technology exceeding $500 per transaction.
• Payment of debts contracted for the erection or construction of schoolhouses or buildings, not including interest on bonds.
• Purchase of transportation equipment for transporting students.
• Procuring or acquisition of library facilities.
• Expenditures for energy conservation.
• Rental of facilities.
• Purchase or lease-purchase of school buildings.
• Equipment purchases for recreational purposes.
• Payments to a municipality or other entity as required under section 403.19, subsection 2 [TIF].
• Demolition, clean-up and other costs incurred within two years of a natural disaster.
• Revenues may not be used for employee salaries or travel; supplies; printing costs or media services; or for any other purpose not expressly authorized by Iowa Code.


Why a special election?
State law requires a vote on whether to renew this levy every 10 years.
Who can vote?
Any registered voter, 18 years old or older, a resident of the Shenandoah CSD can vote.


 
 
Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation

Shenandoah CSD is very pleased to support and partner with the newly formed Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation. The purpose of this foundation is to operate exclusively for the charitable and educational purposes of the school district. The foundation is accepting donations to support the school district's efforts to expand opportunities for all students.

Sealed bids, subject to the conditions contained herein, for Mechanical/Electrical Upgrades to Shenandoah High School Welding Shop will be received by Mr. Dennis Rogers, Building and Grounds Director, Shenandoah High School, 1000 Mustang Drive, Shenandoah, IA 51601, until 12:00 noon, Friday, September 30, 2016 and then publicly opened and read aloud. Owner will consider bids prepared in compliance with the Instructions to Bidders issued by Owner. The Project is described as follows: Install fire-rated doors; Install smoke detection and notification; Install exhaust fans, make-up air units, and unit heaters; Install electrical panels, lighting, and wiring; And all other work shown on the plans and specifications. All work shall be completed by January 4th, 2017. The complete set of Plans, Specifications, and Contract Documents can be obtained from Strategic Design, % Mr. Greg Koll, P.E. (402) 290-5436, GKoll@StratDesign.net. Paper or electronic copies of the Plans Specifications, and Contract Documents are available. Deposit: $350.00 for printed copies, $150.00 refund on return of documents. Bidders must be properly licensed under the laws governing their respective trades and be able to obtain insurance and bonds required for the Work. A Performance Bond and Insurance in a form acceptable to Owner will be required of the successful Bidder. A recommended Pre-Bid Conference will be held Friday, September 23rd, 2016 at 10:00a.m. at the Welding Shop at the Shenandoah High School. Attendance is not mandatory to bid. Bid security shall be submitted with each bid in the amount of 5 percent of the bid amount. No bids may be withdrawn for a period of 60 days after opening of bids. 2016-2017 Student Registration

Dear Families,

Good afternoon! I trust you are enjoying your summer. This email is a reminder that school will be starting on Tuesday, August 23rd and a notice that it is time to register your student(s) for school. We have changed the registration process this year to an online system using PowerSchool.

Registration will open Friday, July 22nd.

If you already have a PowerSchool Account:

If you already have a PowerSchool account and can access the parent portal you can registration starting Friday, July 22nd.

If you have not used PowerSchool before:

A PowerSchool account has been created for you if you provided the district your email address. Mr. Monte Munsinger will be sending your account information. Please watch for an email from Mr. Monte Munsinger. You will be able to access registration if you have this account information starting Friday, July 22nd.

We will need you to come to the JK-8 Building located at 601 Dr. Creighton Circle on Tuesday, July 26th from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM if the district does not have an email address for you.

If you do not have access to the internet or a computer:

Computers will be available to use on July 26th from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the JK-8 Building located at 601 Dr. Creighton Circle. There will be staff available to assist you with PowerSchool and using the computer.

How will I pay for textbook fees and student meals?

You will be able to pay for your student's meals and textbook fees online using a credit card. If you do not have a credit card, you will need to pay using cash or a check on Tuesday, July 26th from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the JK-8 Building located at 601 Dr. Creighton Circle.
